Killing of farmers has to stop!

Another peasant leader from Task Force Mapalad in Negros got killed on June 26, 2006.

He was killed not only by the murderers. He was also killed by the government’s apparent inertia and apathy in solving agrarian violence. With so many unresolved killings of farmers and beneficiaries of agrarian reform, the government seems to be tolerating and supporting this brutal strategy of landlords to block the full implementation of CARP.

In Negros, where most of the vast Arroyo lands are located, justice is implemented according to the terms of landlords. With the inability of the government to investigate the killings effectively and punish their perpetrators, Negros has become a virtual sanctuary for landlords against agrarian reform.

The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program is about to terminate in 2008 and the government has already announced that it will push for the extension of the program for another five years. An extension without any solution to the killings and with vast lands undistributed is a gift to the landlords, including the Arroyos. It gives them a chance to continue using violence to threaten or completely eliminate farmers and those who are demanding for land redistribution. What’s the use of an extension when farmers are either dead or are too scared to demand that the land that they have been tilling for ages should be theirs.
